Forest walk with Temple-our guide, Ben, is a walking encyclopaedia of Japan and can
answer any question on religion, history, botany, geology but not meteorology.
We arrive via Buddhist shrine at inn for soba noodles and demon’s eyes for lunch. They have a strange fire ceremony here every year involving waving huge burning torches inside a wooden building and wacking young men all over their bodies with burning sticks-sometimes the paths to enlightenment can be obscure.
After lunch we gird our loins and other parts of our bodies and proceed uphill to various cliff faces with attached chains which we scramble up with varying degrees of elegance and then it is downhill and a substantial walk in the rain to our comfortable inn for tonight. We have our communal Japanese bath ritual followed by another magnificent dinner.
